Fuel Strike Fears Over As Tanker Drivers Accept Deal

May.14, 2012 | James | Car Insurance

Fears of a strike by fuel tanker drivers have been dashed after they narrowly voted to accept a deal, says Unite the Union.

51% of drivers from seven haulage firms voted to accept the deal, putting an end to the dispute over terms and conditions that led to the panic-buying of fuel back in March.

Unite said that the accepted proposals must be implemented quickly as the vote results left no room for “complacency”, and that the entire situation should be “a wake-up call for an industry riddled with deep-seated problems” in fuel supply.

The union then called upon the Commons energy select committee to launch a comprehensive industry investigation.

A Welcome Result

Blame rested largely on the government for the fuel panic-buying outbreak, particularly one Cabinet Office minister who told motorists to store petrol at their home in jerry cans – advice which Unite assistant general secretary, Diana Holland labelled “calamitous”, and that had only underlined the UK’s “unstable and short” fuel supplies.

Ms Holland added, “This narrow vote in favour lifts the threat of strike action but leaves the companies with no room for complacency.

“The progress made through negotiation is testament to the brave stance members have taken in the face of growing insecurity and attacks on their profession.”

The AA president Edmund King also welcomed the results of the vote, saying that “UK motorists greatly appreciate the tanker drivers’ decision not to put them through another round of panic-buying trauma.”
